This Off Grid Outdoor Kitchen is Decked Out! Build Series Ep. #4
This week, the outdoor kitchen at the Spur Cabin gets a floor. Sure, it looks a lot like a deck at this point, but by design!
This off grid kitchen will be open air, so the elements will not entirely be kept out. With spaced deck boards, any rain that gets in will easily drain away.
There are lots of tips and tricks to be gleaned from this episode, so be sure to watch every...single...screw! What, untreated wood for decking? Yes! And it'll be just fine!
Thank you for watching @LifeontheMoose !
ANNOUNCEMENT: The Moose Merch store is under maintenance, and might not be open for business. Thank you for your patience while we take the necessary steps to remedy the situation.

Framing the Floor: Off Grid Outdoor Kitchen Build. Ep. #3
Просмотров 13 тыс.19 часов назад
Am I building an outdoor kitchen or a deck? Aside from the 4 posts sticking up in the air, so far this off grid mountain kitchen build is pretty much like constructing a deck. In this episode, with stunning mountain scenery as a backdrop, the floor gets framed. Like a deck, I'm using treated material for the joists. It's a straight-forward process, from the joist hangers to the rim joist. I'll ...
Installing Posts & Beams for an Off Grid Outdoor Kitchen. Ep #2
Просмотров 15 тыс.14 дней назад
Using oversized 6x6's that were milled on Red Moose Ranch from Ponderosa Pine killed in a wildfire, I attach them to last week's buried brackets, and boom...we have posts! I used a similar method when I built the barn on the Ranch. No earth-to-wood contact here! And like usual, I couldn't just go buy floor beams...I made them! I simply sandwiched, glued and screwed two treated 2x8's together. F...
Building an Outdoor Kitchen in the Mountains: Concrete Footings. Ep. 1
Просмотров 9 тыс.21 день назад
Welcome to a brand-new build and the brand-new Outdoor Mountain Kitchen series. Located just a stone's throw away from the off grid Spur Cabin, will be the outdoor mountain kitchen. I have never built one before this, so I'll be learning a few things or two as we go. I'll use a few different construction techniques, a little bit of experience, and a dose of common sense, and everything will be ...
I Just Finished Building This Off Grid Cabin…Solo!

I feel like there should be a drumroll... This is the LAST episode of the Spur Cabin building series! Eleven months have gone by since I started this build, and it all comes to a conclusion in this episode. In this video, I'll FINALLY paint the door, stain the deck, and I'll also install a solar light on the outside. But that's not all! I'll take you for a quick stroll down memory lane, highlig...
No-Cost Cabin Baseboard & Trim from Burnt Pine & Reclaimed Lumber.
Просмотров 10 тыс.Месяц назад
Hopefully you've seen the video a few episodes back where I mill logs of burnt Ponderosa Pine from Red Moose Ranch. Well, some of this lumber is used for baseboard and other interior trim in the off grid Spur Cabin. And by now you've probably heard of the old house that used to be standing on the Spur property. We took it down a couple years ago due to it being unsafe, but we kept a lot of the ...
Ponderosa Pine Floor Comes to Life! Off Grid Cabin Build, Ep 42.
Просмотров 10 тыс.Месяц назад
This is quite possibly the best lacquering video you'll see all year! Seriously though, if you enjoy watching already-beautiful wood POP with color and character, then this eye-candy-filled video is made for you. The floor in the off grid Spur Cabin is milled from ponderosa pine, harvested off of Red Moose Ranch several years after being burned by a wildfire. Finishing this floor is icing on th...
Simple Solar Setup. Using a Power Station in an Off Grid Cabin. Ep. 40
Просмотров 18 тыс.Месяц назад
There's more than one way to add electricity to a cabin. If you're off grid, there's still more than one way! You can go the "traditional" solar route, with panels and an inverter and a controller and a battery, or you can utilize a portable power station, and combine 3 units into 1. Simple! But before I plug anything in, I need to wire outlets, switches, and lights. I'll share what I know abou...
Making Live Edge Countertops w Blue Pine Wormwood for Off Grid Cabin.
Просмотров 11 тыс.Месяц назад
Live edge may be trendy, but typically it's also expensive. Not here! Once again, for almost NO MONEY out of pocket (I spent about 17 dollars on brackets and screws) I make easy, beautiful live edge counters for the off grid Spur Cabin. Remember a few episodes back when I milled a bunch of logs, harvested from burned trees? Well, these counters are from those logs. They are blued, they are worm...
Building Simple ZERO-COST Custom Cabinets for an Off Grid Cabin
Просмотров 15 тыс.2 месяца назад
Typically in the building process, "custom" translates to "expensive." Not in the case of the cabinets in the Spur Cabin. Not only are these cabinets custom, they are FREE! From re-purposed wood to leftover screws, the cabinets cost me exactly...nothing. AND... perhaps the best part, the end product will satisfy not only the intended function of a cabinet, but will tickle your inner artist with...
Finishing the Loft in an Off Grid Mountain Cabin. Solo Build Ep. #37

If you like watching real, natural wood come to life with lacquer or tung oil, this is another great video for you! We'll tackle a few other projects as well, all centered around finishing the loft. The railing (pine branches from the property) gets a coat of tung oil to liven it up, and the wide pine plank loft floor gets lacquer. Wow does that look good! We'll also re-purpose wood from the ol...
From Tree to Off Grid Cabin. Milling & Installing a Rustic Pine Floor

I could just go to the nearest box store and buy flooring. But why?! I have trees on the ground, waiting to be milled and shaped into something beautiful. So let's do that! In this video, we take an old burnt tree, cut a log out of it, mill the log, cut the planks, rip and sand the boards, and finally...install stunning, rustic pine flooring! It's just that easy! Well, it's actually not easy at...
From Wildfire to Window Trim & Moose on Video! Off Grid Cabin Build.

No really, a real live moose! Remember that lumber we milled from burnt logs last week? This week, it's going into the Spur Cabin in the form of GORGEOUS window trim. Some of these one-of-a-kind boards are a wormhole wonderland, while others ooze with visual texture. Some are both! All of the windows receive a full wood wrap and casing, and this stuff is stunning. This video REALLY begins about 8 1/2 years ago, when a wildfire destroyed 90% of the pine trees on Red Moose Ranch. Slowly, we have been harvesting what is left of these pines. The log entry to the Ranch is made of these burned trees. As is window trim in the Ridge Cabin, and much of the framing in the woodshed, among other things. In this video, logs from several of these burnt trees are trans...

    As altitude increases relative humidity decreases. So at altitude there is less oxygen per litre of air so the capacity of the air to hold moisture decreases.

    Boards most commonly cup in the direction opposite the growth rings; that is, if you're looking at a smiley face, cupping will tend toward a frown.

    A little stone fireplace place would be nice on the up wind side but I know that would be more work and added expense? But any way it's going to be a really nice place to relax and enjoy friends and family Patrick.

    for the solid wall you will have to research what is the direction of the prevailing wind for the season that you want the most protection in the "Bent Tree Kitchen" LOL

  • @richardwhite3711
    @richardwhite3711 20 часов назад

    @ 28:35 just came to mind, that the 1/4 inch difference towards the end may not be the gaps but the boards probably have some differences in widths from end to end that multiplies over the distance causing some of the discrepancies

  • @richardwhite3711
    @richardwhite3711 21 час назад

    @24:30 you could also take a can of "Thompson's Water Seal" and a tray and roller and just roll the deck, then water will bead up and roll off no problem !!

  • @richardwhite3711
    @richardwhite3711 21 час назад

    @ 16:00 if worried about the decking ( weathering over time ), just take a garden sprayer filled with deck stain/sealer and simply spray the whole deck yearly

    35:09 I would recommend the outdoor kitchen be dual purpose (if not more): As a kitchen with a nice island (for that grill and sink maybe) and as a bathing/miniature hot tub area. You could get a used bathtub some place and have it on there if you need it and drag it off into the bushes if you don't... maybe.

    I have the Doug fir door yard table and 6 chairs my Grandfather made right after getting married, well over 100 years ago. They are untreated, unpainted, and as far as I know have never been given any special treatment except put in the barn during winter snows. As far as I'm concerned...good choice..plus use what you have available.
